IOPS(Input Output operations Per Second):

IOPS is the way of measuring the performances. It is used to determine the read and writing speed of the hard disks such as SATA, SAS, SSD, etc. The IOPS value indicates the number of different input or output operations a device can perform. A device which holds the higher value of IOPS has the capability of handling more operations per second.

 IOPS of SATA and SAS:

SATA-Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. SAS-Serial Attached SCSI. These are the two interfaces used in hard drives for transferring the data. Basically, SATA and SAS are spinning platters hard drives. SATA is available in 1 type whereas SAS is available in two types. These types are classified based on the speed of data platters rotate. Here come the IOPS to determine the speed of these hard drives.

For SATA:

The average speed of the SATA is 7.2K rpm and it can perform up to 100 input-output operations per second. 10K rpm SATA can perform up to 150 IOPS.

For SAS:

SAS is available in 10k and 15k speed. 10K SAS can perform 140 IOPS and 15K SAS can perform 210 IOPS. SAS is faster than SATA and used in Banking Transactions and E-commerce.

 IOPS of SSD:

For SSD, the range of the IOPS is really high depending on the need for increasing the speed of reading and writing capabilities. It lies between 4600 IOPS to 75000 IOPS for SSD. A modern SSD may have an IOPS value above 100000.
