The first spam email was sent in 1978 to several hundred users on ARPANET. The spam mail was sent as an advertisement for a presentation by Digital Equipment Corporation. This mail was sent by Gary Thuerk who was a marketing manager for Digital Equipment Corporation. The spam mail is a form of commercial advertising and the first spam mail was delivered to about 600 recipients.
