The MP3 standard was the property of Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits. Now the patent began to expire and its licensing program has been terminated. A few days before, this format was claimed as “official death warrant”. Most of the relevant patents are expiring, so that MP3 support can be baked into more software. Fedora is starting to include MP3 support with their releases.
