A Modem is a type of a hardware device. It converts between analog and digital data in real time for the two-way network communication. The expansion of the term MODEM is  MODulator dEModulator. The speed of these modems was historically measured in baud (a unit of measurement named after Emile Baudot) and after the development of computer technology, it was converted into bits per second (bps).
