Invention of GIF Format

The GIF file format was invented by Steve Wilhite in 1987 at CompuServe. The compressed format for performing image transfers across the slow modem connections of the time. The GIF team was managed by the Alexander Sandy Trevor who is the former chief technical officer of CompuServe. The new format allowed people to create compressed animations using timed delays.
