The World Wide Web (WWW or the Web) is a system of Internet servers which supports specially formatted documents. The documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), and can be accessed via the Internet. World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. It was released outside of CERN in 1991, first released to other research institutions in January 1991 and to the general public on the Internet in August 1991.
