The first headphones were invented in the year 1910 by American engineer Nathaniel Baldwin. It was invented as the end result of experimentation with the principle of sound amplification by compressed air. He patented and sold them to the United States Navy. The headphones were originated from the telephone receiver earpiece and they were the only way to listen to electrical audio signals before the development of amplifiers.
